Imperfect copy in a 17th-century hand of John Bellenden`s translation of the ‘Scotorum Historiae’ of Hector Boece.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.33.4.15
Scope and Contents This copy lacks folios 2, 3 and 163 (the last), which are supplied in a hand apparently of the 2nd quarter of the 18th century. It appears to have been copied from an earlier manuscript, rather than from the edition which was printed about 1536 in Edinburgh, from which it diverges in a number of places. It is not known who made this copy nor who owned it: what may be `Rob: Innes` has been written in a 17th-century hand at folios 1 and 14 but has been subsequently deleted. The upper corner of...
Dates: Early 16th century.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.18.5.14
Scope and Contents The text ends on folio 105 verso; on folios 106-107 recto in the same hand is a note 'Ad sciendum de vita et morte Boetii Notandum ...'; folios 107 verso and 108 are blank. The text is written in a round Italian gothic hand. There are initials in red and blue, infilled and framed with red and green, at the beginning of each book (folios 1, 15 verso, 35, 63 verso, 87 verso). There are plain initials (some shaded) at the beginning of each section, alternately red and blue; within...
Dates: Late 15th century.

Italian or, more correctly, Tuscan version of the commentary on the 1745 Rebellion entitled ‘Caroli Odoardi Stuardii Walliae Principis Expeditio in Scotiam’ written in four books by Giulio Cesare Cordara, Society of Jesus.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.22.4.18
Scope and Contents According to the title page (folio 2) this version was made "by the ex-Jesuit NN", but the dedicatory espistle to Francesco Caetani, Duke of Sermoneta, which is dated 1804, is signed presumably by the translator (folio 7) whose name cannot be read with certainty. It is suggested by Sir Bruce Gordon Seton, 9th Baronet, of Abercorn, who published an English translation from this manuscript by Lacy Colleson-Morley for the Scottish History Society in ‘Miscellany of the Scottish History Society’,...
Dates: 1751.

Identifier: Adv.MS.31.1.9
Scope and Contents J H Stevenson in his introduction to ‘Gilbert of the Haye’s Prose Manuscript’, volume ii, pages ix-xi, puts this manuscript in his class B with other later manuscripts and the Lyons edition of 1510.The title (folio 1 verso) attributes the work to Symphorien Champier, `conseillier et premier medicin` to Antoine, Duc de Lorraine, for whom he is said to have written it. The date 1534 has been added at the end in another hand, but the manuscript was probably written earlier. In his...

Manuscript annotations of the first half of the eighteenth century on interleaved copies of ‘Fabularum aesopicarum delectus, cum Rogeri L'Estrange, equitis, interpretatione Anglica, necnon Latina variorum, Horatii, Phaedri, Faerni, &c. In usum studiosae juventutis Academiae Edinensis’ (Edinburgi, apud Jacobum Watson, MDCCX).

 Series
Identifier: MSS.16484-16485
Scope and Contents The similarity of the annotations suggests that these volumes reflect closely the elementary teaching of Greek at Edinburgh University in that period, and possibly that students were able to buy or encouraged to have the book interleaved. The only other copy recorded by D Wyn Evans in ‘James Watson of Edinburgh: a bibliography of works from his press 1695-1722’, Edinburgh Bibliography Society Transactions, volume V, part 2, 1982, number 190, in Edinburgh Central Public Library, is not...

Manuscript of, and additional material relating to, ‘Papers Illustrating the History of the Scots Brigade in the Service of the United Netherlands 1572-1782’, edited by James Ferguson [of Kinmundy, Sheriff of Forfarshire], Scottish History Society, 1st Series, Volumes 32 (1899), 35 (1899) and 38 (1901).

 Collection
Identifier: Adv.MSS.81.3.1-81.3.27
Scope and Contents It was originally Ferguson`s intention to print Dutch text and English translation of all Dutch documents quoted, but this scheme had to be abandoned for reasons of space, and only the English translations were ultimately printed (Volume I, page xxxiii). Before this change of plan, the Dutch texts had been inserted into the appropriate places of the manuscript of Volume I and part of Volume II; the rest are preserved separately, Adv.MSS.81.3.15-81.3.23.Summaries and extracts of...

Manuscript of 'The history and chronicles of Scotland', John Bellenden's translation of Hector Boece's ‘Scotorum historiae’.

 Item
Identifier: MS.5288
Scope and Contents Most of the manuscript is, with slight alterations, similar to the first printed edition of John Bellenden's translation (circa 1536), but in places it differs substantially from that and from other texts; it contains only chapters 2 and 3 of 'The cosmographie and discription of Albion' which precedes the main work, but is otherwise complete.Bellenden's chronicle is continued at folio 313 without a break by Robert Lindsay of Pitscottie's 'Historie and chronicles of Scotland' to...

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.33.7.1
Scope and Contents

The work is preceded by a note on Ailred`s life and works, and is followed (folio 67) by a table of contents. The translator has noted a number of other sources for the history, such as John Bale, William of Malmesbury, and the Polychronicon; he has also made a few remarks, mostly opposing William Lambarde`s objections to the miracles, in the latter`s ‘Perambulation of Kent’.

Inside the front cover is the name Richard Chenery in a 17th-century hand.

Dates: 17th century.

 File
Identifier: Adv.MS.18.6.10
